How do I select a better half?

In the Guild 2 I'm preparing yourself to date my first partner, and also from an overview I read it advised selecting a partner whose class complimented mine (ie : Patron for Craftsman). Just how do I establish the class of a possible partner, they appear to all claim 'Unemployed'?
