How to know which versions of application I can install via apt

I attempt to make use of

apt-cache search gedit

But there is no details concerning variation.

I am attempting to install gedit 2.30.4 (by default it is 3.x on Gnome 3). Yet there is no gedit with this variation.

sudo apt-get install gedit=2.30.4
#=> Error

So just how can I identify which variations remain in repo?

The policy command of apt-cache presents the existing mounted and also readily available variations.

apt-cache policy gedit
