Numeric keypad not functioning

I am running Ubuntu 10.04, totally upgraded, from an exterior USB disk drive. Every little thing functions actually well, other than the keyboard. The numerical keypad is not functioning. The keys do not do anything, with or without NumLock on.

The Keyboard Preferences are set for Generic 105 - Key (Intl) COMPUTER. The keyboard itself, on this computer system, is PS2.

Any kind of suggestions where to seek attempting to repair this?
