How to log boot messages?

I'm attempting to examine the boot log messages in the documents /var/log/boot on Ubuntu 8.10 & 9.10 and also I located it vacant with the message (Nothing has been logged yet.). The bootlogd solution is going for the start-up.

I transformed the documents vim /etc/default/bootlogd

# Run bootlogd at startup ?
BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=No

Change No to Yes:

# Run bootlogd at startup ?
BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=Yes

yes, me also. AFAIK,/ var/log/dmesg has the boot messages. The program bootlog duplicates all strings sent out to the/ dev/console tool to/ var/log/boot AFTER the daemon is booted up. Messages from kernel booting remain in dmesg.
