Installed LAMP, but PHP does not seem to work

I did the yum install for apache, mysql, php, phpmyadmin. localhost/phpmyadmin display screens appropriately. I would certainly think PHP function appropriately.

I placed my pages in/ var/www/html/ test_site/ index.php. This web page has phpinfo. Yet it does not present an echo"test";

What can be incorrect
