pppd disconnects from 3G, doesn't reconnect, w/ persist set

I am attempting to set up pppd to connect to a 3G network (Sprint, in this instance) and afterwards remain linked, reconnecting instantly if the remote link is ended. I have actually made it possible for the linger alternative. My arrangement documents is as follows:

hide-password
noauth
connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/chatscripts/cellular"
debug
/dev/cell 921600
defaultroute
noipdefault
user " "
persist
maxfail 0
lcp-echo-failure 10
lcp-echo-interval 60
holdoff 5

However, when the peer separates the link, pppd usually waits a long period of time (considerably greater than my holdoff) to reconnect the modem - - if it ever before reconnects in all!

An instance log revealing this:

The disconnect at the demand of the peer takes place at 5:17, yet the reconnect really did not take place till 6:08. I had a close friend checking the web server so I'm not particular that this had not been a hand-operated reconnection. Regardless, it either took virtually a hr to reconnect or never ever reconnected.

Should not persist+holdoff 5 create this to instantly reconnect after 5 secs of the link ending?
