badblocks and "end_request: I/O error" in output

I have 500GB disk in my toshiba laptop computer, I attempted to do back-up of files in this HDD yet it fell short couple of times (ubuntu simply shut duplicating procedure or unmounted disk throughout duplicating files).

So I boot my laptop computer from ubuntu 12.10 on USB, and also I really did not place that harddrive (it is/ dev/sda1) and also I run:

sudo badblocks -nvs /dev/sda1

and also result is:

[3277.882968] end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 825437

and also milion of comparable lines yet with various numbers

Should I place this disk prior to I run badblocks? Why it is returning numerous I/O mistakes? Do you recognize various other applications to examine disk? I still can place this disk and also surf files on in, yet it resembles I have negative fields or something is incorrect with this HDD, so I would certainly such as to examine it.
